Obituary for Arvin Lynn Wingfield

Arvin Lynn Wingfield was born on March 6, 1942 to Arvin Ray (Jack) and Carrie Anna (Thomas) Wingfield in his family home in the Merritt Community. He went home to a glorious family reunion on July 8, 2019 at the age of 77 at his home in the Merritt Community.
He graduated from Merritt High School in 1960. After high school he joined the Army Reserves and stayed till his discharge in March of 1968. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education, he got his master’s degree from Central State University. He married the love of his life, Annette Roberts, on July 31, 1965 at Sweetwater, OK.
Lynn began his teaching career at Moore Jr. High in the fall of 1967. He and Annette moved to Salem, Oregon in the summer of 1968 where he taught for 1 year at North Salem School. Their daughter Dawn was born in Salem. They moved back to Oklahoma in the summer of 1968. After returning to Oklahoma he taught at Putnam City, Moore Central and finally at Moore West Jr High until the summer of 1976. Their daughter Janet was born in Moore. They moved to Canute, Ok and Lynn started farming with his father. In the summer of 1977, they moved into their home in the Merritt Community. He stopped farming in 1999 and went to work for AutoZone where he retired from in 2006.
Lynn was active in FFA during school and remained a strong supporter of the program. He loved teaching and helping kids learn. In college he was active in collegiate FFA and the Men’s glee club. He sang with the FFA choir at the national FFA convention. He raised cattle and pigs. He loved going to and helping his daughters and eventually grandkids at livestock shows. He helped with mapping and re-organizing the Merritt cemetery. He was active in the Merritt alumni association for many years. He was an avid OSU fan, often telling people he bled orange. He loved traveling and watching his youngest granddaughters dance.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. He never met a stranger and would talk to everyone. He had a dry since of humor and always had a joke for everyone. His favorite joke to tell: When is an Irish potato not an Irish potato? ….. When it’s a French fry.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2019 at Martin-Dugger Funeral Home Chapel, Elk City, Oklahoma. Rev. David Worsham will officiate. Interment will be at Fairlawn Cemetery, Elk City, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to the care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Cherishing his memory is his daughters; Dawn Wingfield of Elk City, Oklahoma and Janet Boykin and her husband Philip of Hokes Bluff, Alabama; six grandchildren; Michael Tillman and wife Andrea of Elk City, Oklahoma, Kimberly Cossey and husband Jason of Elk City, Oklahoma, Abbie Tillman of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Carrie Ann, Kaitlyn and Ashley Boykin of Hokes Bluff, Alabama; eight great-grand kids; two sisters, Joyice Choplin and husband, Jim of Glencoe, Oklahoma, Kathy Gass of Claude, Texas; brother, Jerry Wingfield and wife, Linda of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his wife Annette, his parents Jack and Carrie, his in-laws, Royice and Pauline Roberts, one brother Donald Wingfield, Sr., brother-in-law, E.J. “Sonny” Gass Jr., and nephew, Mark Choplin.
