Obituary for Gertrude Marie Kamphaus

Gertrude was born on August 21, 1925, to Washita County pioneers James J. Zahasky and Johanna (Jenny) Sekora Zahsky on the family farm south of Canute. Gertrude was the youngest of five children. She attended Holy Family grade school and then graduated from Canute Public School in 1943. After graduation she moved to Elk City to work at TG & Y where she manned the candy counter and loved Nut Goodie candies which often made their way into her mouth.
In 1944 she married her high school sweetheart, W.H. Kamphaus. Following Willie’s military service, they made their home in Canute. Gertrude became a homemaker who loved to garden and enjoyed good times with extended family members. To this union four children were born, Joyce, Gloria, Jennifer, and Billy Don. In the early 1960’s when Willie and Gertrude became the sole owners of Kamphaus Appliances she began her career as a business owner and bookkeeper. She continued in this position for the next thirty-four years. Willie and Gertrude were privileged to travel to many foreign countries on trips sponsored by the GE Corporation. In the later years they took many trips on motorcycles with their friends and joined the Good Sam’s travel club and toured several states. After losing her husband of fifty years Gertrude enjoyed traveling and attending events with family friends. At a reunion Gertrude became reacquainted with her high school friend Eugene Kamphaus and they married in 1999. They continued to travel but most enjoyed working together at St. Vincent de Paul until his death in 2008.
Gertrude, a devout Catholic and a child of the Great Depression shared her faith and strong work ethic with her children and grandchildren. Even to the ends of her days if you told her you had to go to work, she was agreeable to your leaving.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the St. Mathews Catholic Church in Elk City, Oklahoma. Father Philip Louis will officiate. Interment will be at Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, in Canute, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to the care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home in Elk City, Oklahoma.
Cherishing her memory are her four children, Joyce Tywman and husband, Floyd, Gloria King and husband Paul, Jennifer Zent and husband, Howard, Billy Don Kamphaus and wife, Renee; nine grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and dear friends too numerous to mention.
She is preceded in death by her husbands; parents; three sisters, Evelyn Dolin, Viola Kilhoffer and Adella Scheindel; one brother, James Zahasky; two grandchildren, Jon Amos Twyman and Melissa Hill Kamphaus.
Memorials can be made to St. Mathews Food Bank in care of Martin-Dugger Funeral Home, P.O. Box 707, Elk City, Oklahoma 73648.
