Obituary for Melvonia Lantz

Melvonia Helton Lantz was born on September 5, 1935 to Dixon Alpina and Nancy (Cavnar) Helton in Littlefield, Texas. She had two older brothers, Charles and James, who served in Europe and the South Pacific during World War II. Her father served during the Argonne Offensive, in France, during World War I.
As a young girl, the family moved to Booneville, Arkansas where she lived until her high-school graduation in 1953.
Fortunately, a young roughneck named Graydon Lantz was working on a well just outside the Booneville city limits. In a flash their eyes met, and their adventure began. Moving to Pampa, Texas, Mel and Grady gave birth to and raised three boys and a girl as their life in the oilfield progressed.
After stints in Healdton, Weatherford and Chickasha, Mel and Grady moved to elk City in 1976. With the Grace of God and the fortune of an oil boom, Lantz Trucking was been. They operated this business from 1977 to 1994. They also ventured into a very successful partnership in the banking business until retiring in 2016.
While raising her four children and being a very hands-on grandmother and great grandmother to 25 children, Mel found time to serve on the Elk City Planning and Zoning Commission, Chai the Oil and Gas Golf Tournament for twenty years, work with the Chamber of Commerce, volunteer for meals on wheels, sit on various boards and Chair the Ladies Petroleum Club.
After losing her beloved husband Grady in 2017, Mel moved into Baptist Village Assisted Living Center and resided there until going to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 13, 2019.
Her legacy transcends her public service. She set examples for young women young and old. With her dedication to serve and her compassion for those less fortunate, she set a high bar for the rest of us.
She will be loved and missed.
